Galatians 6:9

Potholes of life

I recently took a trip by road to a rural settlement which is about 160 km from my hometown. Being a fast driver I naturally calculated that I will make the journey in 1 and a half hours tops. However, it took me more than 4 hours to make that journey

The reason: POTHOLES. It seemed as if in this road the plethora of potholes were literally having their own competition to see which one was wider and deeper. Whenever I hit one, I had to slow down and adjust my speed accordingly

This is true in our lives as we live on this earth. Things are never smooth. A writer once wrote, ‘smooth sailing does not make for skilled sailors.’ I concur with this notion fully. We will all hit ‘potholes’ in our journey of life. What matters is what we do moving forward. Our potholes might differ in sizes and circumstances. However the attitude we choose to promote will speak towards whether we are successful or not. Some of the potholes we will run into are: financial constraints, family squabbles, relationship problems, career stagnation etc.

It matters then how you will react when you meet them. Just because one has hit a pothole is not an excuse for us to change our destination. When you are driving to Durban from Johannesburg and you hit a pothole, you do not change your journey to go to Polokwane instead. You change your driving pattern and adjust your expected time of travel but never the vision of the journey.

Let’s be honest, we all have different dreams and desires namely: successful careers, loving spouses, obedient children etc. Many of us have lost sight of our visions and dreams because of the potholes that we have endured as we travail in life. The fact that the road is bumpy does not mean that the dream is unattainable. Let’s have the character to hold on to the vision and keep on keeping on. If we do that then in this life we shall achieve all that we desire. Scriptures say in Galatians 6:9 (KJV) - “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

I believe in God and His faithfulness to bring everything to pass for good in our life on earth. May you have the fortitude to ride the potholes in your life and achieve your dream with excellence. I assure you, your vision is worth the effort.
